Is Claude Duet just scheduled Cowork?

This is the most common question about Claude Duet vs Cowork, and it is fair. Cowork already has scheduled tasks that run in the cloud, so you can set up a daily summary of your inbox today. The difference is in three places.

Who starts the work

A Cowork scheduled task does the exact job you wrote, at the time you chose. Claude Duet decides for itself whether anything is worth your attention. If nothing changed, it stays quiet; if a contract renewal is suddenly due, it raises it without being told to look for renewals.

Where it runs

Duet always works on its own private cloud computer, and logins and approvals happen there too. Claude Cowork can also work with files on your computer through the desktop app, which Duet cannot.

How it reaches you

Duet is phone-first: push notifications, one continuous thread, voice input. Cowork results land in the Claude app when the task is done, and you go and look.

Where Claude Duet beats Cowork

Phone-first

If most of your day is away from a desk, Duet fits better. You approve a drafted reply from a notification and move on. The iPhone and Android apps are built for that.

Laptop can be closed

Duet's watching never depends on your machine being awake. It keeps checking your apps every few hours wherever you are.

Things you did not think to ask about

The launch demo's best moment is Duet noticing that a health permit had not been filed for a new location opening in 26 days. That is not a task anyone would schedule. Proactive noticing is the whole point, and it is why the morning brief matters.

Where Cowork beats Claude Duet

Local files

Claude Cowork can work with folders on your computer through Claude Desktop. Duet runs only in the cloud and has no local mode.

Team plans

Cowork is available on Team and Enterprise. Duet is limited to personal US Pro and Max accounts during the preview. If Claude is a work tool provided by your company, Cowork is the agent you can actually use today.

Long desk sessions

For a long piece of work you want to steer closely, such as a research report, a spreadsheet model or a slide deck, Cowork in the Claude app is the better fit. You can pick the model, watch progress and iterate in one sitting.

Which one should you open first?

A quick way to choose is to look at the shape of the job rather than the size of it.

If the job is…Reach forWhy
Ongoing and unpredictable (inbox, invoices, renewals)DuetIt decides when something is worth raising
Fixed and recurring (Monday report, weekly digest)Cowork scheduled taskSame output, same time, no judgment needed
Big and one-off (research report, financial model, deck)CoworkYou steer it closely in one sitting
Involves files on your laptopCoworkDuet has no access to local files
Needs a decision while you are outDuetPhone notification with approve or decline
For your employer on a Team planCoworkDuet is personal Pro and Max only for now

In practice the split becomes obvious after a week. People tend to keep one or two scheduled tasks for things they never want to change, hand the messy middle of their day to Duet, and open the Claude app when they sit down to make something substantial. If you find yourself writing very detailed instructions to Duet about exactly when and how to run a report, that is a sign the job belongs in a scheduled task instead. If a scheduled task keeps producing output you ignore, that is a sign Duet's judgment would serve you better.

Claude Duet vs Claude Code

Different jobs

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for developers: it reads and edits code in a repository and runs commands. Duet is a personal agent for inbox, calendar and business apps. They do not overlap much. A developer might use Claude Code all day and Duet to keep on top of email between sessions.

Use Claude Duet and Cowork together

Because both agents share your Claude memory, skills and connectors, they work well as a pair.

Handoff patterns

  • Duet notices, Cowork builds. Duet flags in the morning brief that quarterly numbers are due; you open Claude and have Cowork build the full report from your files.
  • Cowork schedules the fixed jobs, Duet watches the rest. Keep the Monday KPI report as a Cowork scheduled task, and let Duet handle the unpredictable things.
  • Watch usage. Both draw on the same plan limits, so heavy use of one leaves less for the other. See Claude Duet pricing.
