Claude Duet Research Preview Launch
What launched
A standalone proactive agent app on iOS, Android and the web.
Who gets it
US Pro and Max subscribers, by waitlist.
What's next
A safety write-up, tuning from early users, wider access.
On October 21, 2026, Anthropic opened the Claude Duet research preview: a new app in which Claude works as a proactive agent. In Anthropic's words, it "comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf."
This post rounds up everything announced on launch day, puts it in the context of a busy autumn for personal AI agents, collects the first reactions, and lists the open questions we will be watching.

Claude Duet research preview: what Anthropic announced
Key facts
- What it is: a proactive agent that sends a morning brief, flags what needs you across your apps, handles tasks you send by text or voice, and reports back with finished work.
- Model: Opus 5.5.
- Setup: memory, skills and connected apps carry over from your Claude account; history lives in one thread.
- Apps: standalone iOS and Android apps, plus claude.ai on a computer.
- Connectors: more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Gmail, Slack, Google Drive, QuickBooks, Stripe, Shopify, HubSpot and Notion.
- Safety: approval required to send, pay, sign or delete; Duet never directly sees your passwords; a new classifier guards against sharing sensitive information; logins and approvals run in a private cloud computer.
- Access: early research preview, waitlist only, Claude Pro and Max in the US. Team and Enterprise are not included yet.
- Cost: no separate price; it shares your plan's usage limits, and background checks count.
- Known gaps: it can misread a thread, misjudge urgency and miss items between check-ins.

The launch video
Anthropic's 99-second launch video follows the owner of a fictional coffee company through a day with the agent: a morning notification listing three priorities, a daily dashboard refreshed at 5:30 a.m., a health permit drafted because a new location opens in 26 days, and an offer letter held behind a Send button until she approves it. It closes with team members from Anthropic Labs and the Claude Code team, and an invitation to "join the waitlist and help us shape it."
Where Claude Duet fits in a crowded autumn
Timeline
| Date (2026) | Launch |
|---|---|
| Sept 8 | Meta Muse, a personal agent on its own secure cloud computer (US, limited testing) |
| Sept 16 | Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into one Claude |
| Sept 29 | OpenAI announces ChatGPT Dots, always-on agents, at DevDay |
| Oct 21 | Claude Duet research preview opens |
9to5Mac framed the launch as Anthropic taking on ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse, and the comparison is natural: all three give an agent its own computer in the cloud and keep risky actions behind a human. Our side-by-sides cover Duet vs Dots and Duet vs Muse.
Early Claude Duet reactions and reviews
Press
Launch-day coverage from MacRumors, 9to5Mac and Unite.AI focused on three points: the proactive morning brief, the approval rule for sensitive actions, and the narrow access. One early setup guide from The Rundown was notably candid that its authors had not yet tested the product and built their walkthrough from Anthropic's documentation, which is a fair summary of where hands-on coverage stands one day in.
Community
As of October 22 there are no substantial hands-on Claude Duet reviews yet, and threads on Reddit and elsewhere are mostly about access: who has an invite, whether the waitlist moves faster for Max, and whether non-US users can join. The answers so far: invites are trickling out, nothing suggests Max is prioritized, and the preview is US-only. We will add a review roundup once early users have had the agent for a week or two.
What the launch means for you
Whether this matters to you today depends mostly on where you live and how you pay for Claude.
US Pro or Max subscribers
Join the waitlist now; it costs nothing. While you wait, tidy your Claude memory and connected apps, because the agent inherits both on day one. Decide on one recurring chore to hand off first.
Everyone outside the US
There is no date yet. The closest thing you can use today is Cowork in the regular Claude app, which runs scheduled tasks in the cloud. It will not come to you with a morning brief, but it covers a lot of the same ground. See how the two compare in Duet vs Cowork.
Teams and companies
Team and Enterprise plans are excluded for now, so employees may start connecting work email to personal subscriptions. It is worth setting a policy early on which accounts a personal agent may touch.
Free users
A paid plan is required. If you were waiting for a reason to upgrade, wait a little longer: the preview is invite-only, and upgrading does not appear to speed up an invitation.
What to watch next for Claude Duet
Safety write-up
Anthropic said it will "share more on our approach to safety in Claude Duet soon." That should explain how the sensitive-information classifier works and how the private cloud computer isolates credentials. We will update our safety guide when it lands.
Expansion
The obvious next steps are more countries, Team and Enterprise plans, and clarity on whether Duet stays included in Pro and Max after the research preview. Track them on the availability page and in pricing.
Tuning
Anthropic says it will keep tuning Duet's sense of urgency based on what early users report. If you have access, the setup tutorial explains how to give the kind of feedback that helps.
